The collection consists of personal and official papers of William Tapley Bennett, Jr. from 1941-1990. The papers mainly document Bennett's diplomatic and ambassadorial service with the United States Department of State, the United Nations Security Council (1971-1977) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's North Atlantic Council (1977-1983). Of particular note are the materials from Bennett's assignment as Ambassador to the Dominican Republic during the 1965 Dominican Crisis. Other assignments documented include Austria, Portugal, and Maxwell Air Force Base. The papers also document his military service, personal life, and involvement in international diplomatic organizations. Included are correspondence, speeches, newsclippings, printed material, photographs, and appointment books.
